Civic Engagement

Percent of young people age 18-24 who voted.

About this data

The percent of 18-24 registered to vote and who did vote in the past several elections is used to demonstrate civic engagement. In the chart below the darker shade reflects the percent of 18-24 year olds who voted, overlaid on the lighter shade that reflects the percent of 18-24 year olds who were registered to vote. Compared to national rates, Rhode Island has exceeded the number of registered voters at this age group for the past several years. Additionally, the percent of Rhode Island individuals who did vote slightly exceed both the national rate and rate in Massachusetts.

Of the data presented, it is important to note that the 2014 and 2018 elections were midterm elections; the 2016 and 2020 were Presidential elections.
